#CollegeEconomist: World Cup Review

The FIFA World Cup is the single largest sporting event in the world has has the world for one month captivated on the edges of our seats with nail-biting contests between teams, ecstatic goals and regrettably some teams countries whose hopes at the cup crushed only to be eluded by defeat in the group stage and round of 16.

By now the fans are anticipating a Final between Germany and  Netherlands or Argentina. Biases taken if you look closely. But I'm  not writing to try and predict who  the winner of the contest will be but to just present to you how much economic benefit will actually be derived , if any.

This world cup is slated to be the most expensive world cup of all time coming in at 11.3 billion dollars, many protested about the cost overruns, but is Brazil going to benefit from hosting the World Cup Games. Maybe

The expected return from hosting the games,  is going to come from Tourism based expenditure ,however these returns will not repay the 11.3 billion bill anytime soon. But in the meantime Brazil being in the final  will be the best option for them in terms of economic returns as Brazilians will spend more in support of their home team, however since they lost their semifinals there can still be some economic impact if one the Europeans teams win.

Country pride may be hurt but the world cup must go on
