Lovers Cuss over Food

As I was browsing through Facebook yesterday I found this picture and said that that I have to share it with my readers. The Picture describes a boycott of Trinidadian food products in lieu of Jamaicans not being allowed entry into Trinidad. Though on the spur of the moment and in the heat of passion and resentment a boycott of Trinidadian goods will definitively have sparse impacts in both islands.

Here is My take:

Trinidad is the third largest Import partner for Jamaica...Jamaica is the third largest export market for Trinidadian products...Jamaican companies list on the Trinidad and Tobago Stock Exchange (TTSE)...Trinidadian companies operate within Jamaica and vice-versa ...

If this were to end both countries obviously would have to find new partners. This partnership which has been around from Federation days would end in a bitter divorce. As we have been seeing with Trinidad Immigration not allowing some Jamaicans...It would be very simple for Jamaican officials to serve a cease and desist order on the issuance of  work permits to Trinidad and Tobago citizens as well as to not allow students to complete their course of study at the UWI Mona Campus.

As I Mentioned a Bad Lovers quarrel. We would hate for Kamla to tell Portia, "1 from 15 leaves 5".And I could just imagine my prime minister getting dark and Launching a military attack against the twin island republic trying to seize their oil and natural gas resources.

Hopefully we wont go down this memory lane which will undo the all the positives of Regionalism.

But with a trade deficit of about $23 billion US there is major concern about Trinidad Jamaica relations. However the deficit tells us Trinidad and Tobago can provide for their own needs they only need Jamaica as a market. While Import based Jamaica will have to make new friend in the east if We ever 'BREAK UP'.
