Pennies for Thoughts, But Nothing My Troubles
This year represents the beginning of a new phase and the end of an era, the start of a new Program another level for degree, however at the same place.
What I want to talk about today is the Use of a PhD. From way back when as conceited and self praising as it may seem ,I've always wanted the title "Dr." in front of my name.
Sometimes today I wander why didn't I slap those thoughts away knowing full well what I know today. An Economist article I came across during one my numerous searches for 4 year PhD's, happened to reveal that most if not all PhD programs are failing in their initial aim and purpose.
The purpose of doing a PhD by many conventional standards is to become a researcher in the field however many students who graduate from PhD programs do not publish at the rate that is required for them to validated their degrees. But lets face it, the bulk of PhD grads go onto working in business or for government where their jobs simply don't require them to do any form of new research. neither do the jobs allow for them to research outside of working hours. But what is all this blurbing about?
The reason why most poeple choose the PhD route is not to advance knowledge but to distinguish themselves, once you get that stage you join the club for which they're are no higher degrees... Most Professors have to have a PhD.
Lets make this abundantly clear, academia is about the advancement of knowledge not enterprise. i.e there is no money to made from teaching. I however want to have the best of both worlds, I want to be one of those people who advance knowledge through studies as well as enterprise.
