Sex Compensation: Why do men get paid a higher salary?
Even though the traditional roles of men alone being the breadwinners is slowly diminishing the ideological view that males are the dominant creatures of the sexes still holds in place. This view has not left the business world.
Out of the Fortune 1000 companies in United States only 4.6% or just 46 women hold the position of Chief Executive Officer. So, the so called equality scale only applies in the general populous where about 50% of the US Labour force is female. According to the Statistical Institute of Jamaica as of January 2013, the Labour Force was 1.247 Million and out that only 584, 500 are women which is just about 47%.
So the figures are not really equal.
The rationale of some business owners is that it is a greater return on an investment to hire a man over woman. As you do not have to pay him for 'maternity leave' (But based on my paternity leave article last last year you know my views on this issue), he does not have a period so he will not take as many sick days(highly stereotypical but sometimes true) and he is more willing to work overtime whether or not he has a family.
So many times its not that the woman is under qualified for the position but she might not be the best suited candidate holistically for the business.
There are some jobs however that are female dominated but have a few males working alongside them and some statistics from the United states shows that some Males Registered Nurse, Teachers and Human Resource Managers are paid a marginally higher salary than their female counterparts as a form of "stay compensation".
