Do you really just want a higher wage?
If given the choice between a job that pays a marginally higher wage and a job which gives greater employment benefits which one would you choose?
Think about it for a moment; with more money you can do more, buy more things, better things. But with more benefits you get to use your money for other things.
The truth of the matter is that the older and more responsible you are the more likely you are to take the job with higher benefits. When you are young you are almost invincible, so you simply need dental and maybe travelling allowances as well as a single health policy.
However as you age, and your responsibilities increase , you need employment benefits such as a family health and dental, travel, longer vacation time, maternity/paternity leave and you become more prone to compassionate leave in the case of a loved becoming ill or dying.
The point is the older you are the more you looking at benefits versus just a higher income. It is believed that workers are wage seeking suppliers of labor, however based on modern trends many workers are reviewing the quality of the wages which they expected to receive versus just the amount.
The alternate issue surrounding employment benefits is pension planning, in the US referred to as the 401k, which is a contribution based pension, in Jamaica pensions are summarized either by NIS payments or personal pension saving.
It may not be common knowledge, that Jamaican companies and public sector does not provide adequate employee benefits.
